STAT+: Rolling back health AI transparency rule will shift the burden of vetting to health systems










A Trump administration proposal to deregulate artificial intelligence products used in health care would shift the burden of vetting those tools onto health systems that would have to work harder to prove the technology is trustworthy, experts said.

In documents released late Monday, the federal agency that regulates health information technology proposed to eliminate requirements that software vendors disclose how AI tools are developed and evaluated.

If implemented as written, the proposal would mean that health care providers who use AI products would have to push technology vendors to provide that information to help ensure the tools are safe and effective for use on their patient populations. It is especially important to get those details to help compare available products and ensure they are implemented fairly and appropriately.
