If so, this post is for you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people start in analytics because it generally has a lower barrier to entry, but as they gain experience, they realize they want to take on more technical challenges, dive deeper into machine learning, or even just increase their earning potential. Moving from Data analyst to <a href=\"https:\/\/towardsdatascience.com\/tag\/data-scientist\/\" title=\"Data Scientist\">Data Scientist<\/a> can be a smart career move\u200a\u2014\u200abut it requires the right strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re new here, my name is Marina. I\u2019m an Applied Scientist at Amazon, and <a href=\"https:\/\/topmate.io\/marina_wyss\">I\u2019ve helped dozens of people<\/a> transition into tech, even from non-traditional backgrounds\u200a\u2014\u200amyself included.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this post, we\u2019re going to cover everything you need to know to make the transition from data analyst to data scientist successful:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">What skills you\u2019ll need to develop<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">My favorite learning resources<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">And strategies for landing interviews and securing job offers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s get into it, starting with deciding if this transition is even a good idea for you in the first place.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Role comparison<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we get started, let\u2019s just make sure we\u2019re all on the same page about what the difference is between these roles anyway, starting with data analytics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data analysts focus on working with structured data to drive business decisions. Their toolkit typically includes SQL, Excel, Tableau or PowerBI, and basic Python for data processing, visualization, and maybe simple statistical analyses. The role centers on understanding <em>historical<\/em> data to answer questions about what happened and why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data scientists build on these foundations but extend into predictive modeling and automated decision-making. While they also use SQL and Python, they work more extensively with statistical modeling, machine learning frameworks, and cloud platforms. Their focus shifts to predicting <em>future<\/em> outcomes and recommending actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A common misconception is that data analysts must become data scientists to advance their careers. That\u2019s definitely not true!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior analysts can earn high salaries and have a really strong business impact without deep ML or statistical knowledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honestly, not everyone is going to enjoy data science work, and many would be happier staying on the analytics path.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So before we go any further, ask yourself the following questions:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Are you curious about machine learning and how it works?<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Are you comfortable with (or at least interested in) advanced mathematics and statistics?<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Are you comfortable with technical challenges and software engineering concepts?<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Are you ok with a role that has a lot of ambiguity, both in the daily work and the career progression?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re still with me and thinking \u201cYes, I definitely want to pursue data science,\u201d let\u2019s talk about how to make it actually happen.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skills needed to transition<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alright, so now that you\u2019ve decided to make the transition, let\u2019s break down the key skills you\u2019ll need to develop. We\u2019ll focus on four core areas that form the foundation of data science work.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mathematics &amp; statistics<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re coming from an analytics background, you probably have some exposure to statistics, but data science might require a bit more depth on the math front. You\u2019ll need to be comfortable with:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Multivariable calculus and linear algebra, particularly matrix operations and gradients for understanding machine learning algorithms. But don\u2019t worry\u200a\u2014\u200ayou don\u2019t need to be a math expert, you just need enough to understand the fundamentals to help you grasp how algorithms work.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">You\u2019ll also need probability theory and hypothesis testing for experimental design.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">As well as statistical concepts like different types of distributions and regression techniques<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">And ideally, some experience with causal inference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Programming<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re already using SQL and basic Python in your role, you have a head start here. Now it\u2019s just about leveling up. Focus on:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">More advanced Python, so things like OOP fundamentals, writing modular maintainable code, unit tests, performance optimization, and so on.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Using ML frameworks like scikit-learn, Tensorflow, and PyTorch.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">And familiarity with basic data structures and algorithms for coding interviews. Generally this will just be questions on arrays and strings, so you don\u2019t need to go too crazy with this, but it\u2019ll be important to know for interviewing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Machine learning &amp; AI fundamentals<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is another core pillar of data science, so you\u2019ll want to be comfortable with ML fundamentals like:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Supervised learning (so, regression and classification).<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Unsupervised learning (things like clustering and dimensionality reduction).<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Model evaluation and validation.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Deep learning basics.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">And these days, being familiar with GenAI is a plus (but by this I mean learning how to work with APIs, not training models from scratch)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Big data &amp; data engineering concepts<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, many data science roles involve working with large-scale datasets and building automated pipelines. For this, you\u2019ll want to focus on:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Working with cloud computing platforms, particularly AWS services like S3 and SageMaker<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Data pipeline development using tools like Airflow<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Potentially basic system design principles for scaling your solutions (this is more important as you become more senior or focus more on ML).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to develop these skills<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we\u2019ve covered <em>what<\/em> you need to learn, let\u2019s talk about how to actually build these skills. There are a few different paths you can take, and the right one for you will depend on your budget, learning style, and schedule.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Self-study<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re self-motivated and disciplined, self-study can be a totally reasonable and cost-effective way to transition into data science. The key is consistent practice and choosing the right resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some great courses I\u2019d recommend checking out, in order (these are affiliate links, btw!):<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Start with the DeepLearning.AI <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i384100.net\/dOGYa3\">Mathematics for Machine Learning and Data Science Specialization<\/a> (affiliate link!). This covers linear algebra, calculus, and probability and statistics, so you\u2019ll have a solid foundation for the next things to learn. It\u2019s presented in a really accessible way, so don\u2019t be scared about starting with math.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Then, check out the classic <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i384100.net\/o44Kq9\">Stanford Machine Learning Specialization<\/a> (affiliate link!), which gives a solid introduction to ML fundamentals.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">After that, the DeepLearning.AI <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i384100.net\/LK27X3\">Deep Learning Specialization<\/a> (affiliate link!), at least the first three courses.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">And finally, as a bonus I\u2019d recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i384100.net\/Qjb7y9\">Generative AI with Large Language Models course<\/a> (affiliate link!). This is a short course that is a good way to get familiar with modern AI applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll also need to get an understanding of basic DSA for coding interview prep. For this I enjoyed Educative\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educative.io\/courses\/grokking-coding-interview-in-python?aff=VOR0\">Grokking the Coding Interview Patterns<\/a> in Python, which focuses on common patterns for data structures and algorithms questions. I found this really helpful so that it doesn\u2019t just seem like you need to \u201cknow the trick\u201d to answer the LeetCode problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, a few books that are worth reading (these are also affiliate links, but I do &lt;3 all these books):<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3DgTa61\">Practical Statistics for Data Scientists\u200a<\/a>\u2014\u200aA great resource to deepen your statistical knowledge along with examples in R and Python.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3FjsdyZ\">Hands-On Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn, Keras, and TensorFlow<\/a> for practical ML examples.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4bxzJSX\">Software Engineering for Data Scientists<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200aThis book is great and can help bridge the gap between the kind of coding you might be familiar with for analytics and production-level coding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are tons more, but this would be my top three. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3QU7lAV\">Here is a link<\/a> to more of my favorite technical books if you want to explore further!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important thing when going the self-study route is consistency. Make a schedule and stick to it, even if it\u2019s just a little bit each day.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bootcamps<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, maybe you\u2019re thinking you\u2019d prefer to have a little more structure and outside accountability in your learning. If you don\u2019t want to commit to a full degree, bootcamps can be another option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some pros of bootcamps are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Fast-paced learning\u200a\u2014\u200aYou generally can complete them in a few months.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Structured curriculum, because everything is laid out for you, so you don\u2019t have to piece together your own learning plan.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">And community support\u200a\u2014\u200aYou get to learn alongside peers and get mentorship from instructors who may be folks already working in the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing to keep in mind is that bootcamps vary in quality, and not all are super valued by employers. Before enrolling, do your research\u200a\u2014\u200aso, check reviews, talk to alumni, and make sure they offer career support.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Master\u2019s degree<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those looking for a deep dive into data science with strong networking opportunities, a Master\u2019s degree can be a solid investment. This is especially useful if you\u2019re transitioning from a non-technical background, or if you\u2019re worried your background won\u2019t be passing resume scanning tools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The downside is obviously that Master\u2019s programs can be expensive and time-consuming. But the good news here is that there are now affordable, part-time online programs that allow you to study while working. For example, Georgia Tech\u2019s programs are really affordable and of pretty decent quality.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mentorship<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter which path you take, mentorship can be incredibly helpful. Having someone to guide you, provide feedback, and help with career navigation can make a huge difference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some ways to find mentors:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">At your company\u200a\u2014\u200aIf your company has data scientists, ask if you can collaborate or shadow them.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">LinkedIn\u200a\u2014\u200aJoin data science groups or reach out to professionals (I have a whole <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T0LP6Pv3_zs&amp;t=35s\">video on mentorship strategies<\/a> if you need help with this!).<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Online communities like Reddit, Discord servers, and Slack groups can be another avenue to connect with fellow learners and professionals.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Or, hire a mentor\u200a\u2014\u200aIf you\u2019re serious about leveling up quickly, investing in a mentor <em>can<\/em> be worth it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Demonstrating experience<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ok, so you\u2019ve learned all the skills you need. That\u2019s great, but how do you prove to a potential employer that you actually can do the job of a Data Scientist?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oG-IIUoPzBA&amp;t=3s\">a whole video on how to build a portfolio and get experience outside of your full-time employment<\/a>. The TL;DR there is that you should try your best to do self-motivated projects that allow you to simulate the working conditions of being on the job as closely as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you\u2019re reading this post, there\u2019s a decent chance you\u2019re currently working as a Data Analyst already, which gives you a whole other set of opportunities to leverage within your current role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019re regularly creating reports in Excel or Tableau. You could automate this process with Python scripts, maybe even add some predictive elements. Or if your company runs A\/B tests, volunteer to help with the statistical analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a data science team, try to collaborate with them on a project. And if there isn\u2019t a data science team, pitch your employer on some impactful projects that would also help you to learn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Best case scenario, this can result in an internal transition. Worst case, you now have concrete examples of impact and real data science projects to include on your resume.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting a job<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re able to transition internally then great, you\u2019re done! If not, here are some strategies to help you get that first Data Science role:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, let\u2019s talk about how to position yourself online. Your resume, LinkedIn, and GitHub need to tell a consistent story that you are already a competent data scientist (because if you have the skills and have done solid projects, you are!). So, instead of writing \u201cData Analyst seeking Data Scientist role,\u201d you might say \u201cData professional specializing in predictive analytics and machine learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to your GitHub, make sure to put your best stuff at the top here. This is especially important for analysts, since your coding skills will be under more scrutiny. So,<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Pin your best ML projects at the top<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Write clear READMEs that explain your approach<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Make sure your code is well structured and documented, showing you understand software engineering principles<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">And add visualizations and results to showcase the impact, which should be easy for you with your background!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once it\u2019s time to apply, prioritize hybrid roles. These are positions that sit between traditional analytics and data science, and they\u2019re often an excellent stepping stone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, lots of companies (including big tech firms like Meta and Amazon) have roles that they call \u201cData Scientist\u201d but are actually more like advanced analytics positions. And honestly at many companies, the lines are blurry anyway. Use this ambiguity to your advantage!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you\u2019re networking and preparing for interviews, leverage your analytics background. Use your deep understanding of business context, clear communication skills, and examples of how you\u2019ve influenced the business to deliver measurable impact. Other candidates who may be more technical than you might struggle with the business and communication side of things. So don\u2019t be afraid to lean into your strengths.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dotted\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, this transition isn\u2019t going to happen overnight, and that\u2019s okay. What matters is consistent progress.
