Since taking office, President Donald Trump has slashed biomedical research funding, fired thousands<\/a> of federal agency scientists, canceled training programs<\/a> for young researchers, temporarily removed access to public datasets<\/a>, and pressured scientists to alter or abandon work ideologically opposed to the White House\u2019s agenda. In an open letter <\/a>published Monday, nearly 2,000 of the nation\u2019s top researchers called on the Trump administration to halt this \u201cwholesale assault on U.S. science,\u201d which they say is threatening America\u2019s position as a global research leader as well as the health and safety of its citizens.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are speaking out as individuals. We see real danger in this moment. We hold diverse political beliefs, but we are united as researchers in wanting to protect independent scientific inquiry,\u201d they wrote. \u201cWe are sending this SOS to sound a clear warning: the nation\u2019s scientific enterprise is being decimated.\u201d<\/p>\n
