WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump is widely expected to try to advance a \u201cmost-favored nation\u201d policy next week in an effort to reduce U.S. drug prices \u2014 a move that is likely to significantly rattle the pharmaceutical industry, cheer his political base, and, possibly, leave open some very big questions.<\/p>\n
The idea behind the policy, generally speaking, is simple: It would tie payments for drugs in the United States to prices paid by other high-income countries, many of which pay far less than Americans for their medications. It\u2019s also not a new idea: The first Trump administration tried to set it in motion, only for its plans to be blocked.<\/p>\n
But now, having learned the lessons from that defeat, and with a majority in the House and the Senate, the administration could face better odds.<\/p>\n
