Instead, the plaintiffs indicated that they may be able to settle the case by the end of this week.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In June, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/06\/16\/nih-research-cuts-ruled-illegal-by-federal-judge-william-young\/\">federal judge ruled<\/a> in two cases \u2014 one filed by a group<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/69843493\/commonwealth-of-massachusetts-v-kennedy-jr\/?order_by=desc\"> of 16 state attorneys general<\/a> and another filed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/69835536\/american-public-health-association-v-national-institutes-of-health\/\">American Public Health Association<\/a> \u2014\u00a0that some of the grant terminations by the NIH earlier this year were \u201cvoid and illegal.\u201d\u00a0 The NIH began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/07\/03\/nih-cuts-grant-restoration-complicated-by-limits-to-court-order-trump-dei-restrictions\/\">reinstating those awards<\/a>, handing a temporary victory to researchers across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Then late last month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/08\/21\/supreme-court-trump-research-funding-cuts-anti-dei-push\/\">Supreme Court<\/a>\u00a0issued an emergency order ruling that while the NIH directive used to terminate millions of dollars in grants was possibly illegal, the federal court did not have jurisdiction to order the government to reinstate funds that had already been rescinded.
