STAT+: Fifty cancer types in one liquid biopsy test: Exact Sciences enters early-detection market

Consumers can now purchase Exact Sciences\u2019 liquid biopsy early detection test, Cancerguard, and get an indication of whether they might have one of 50 different cancers included in the test\u2019s analysis. The biotechnology company launched the test on Wednesday, and Tom Beer, Exact\u2019s chief medical officer, relayed the news with elation.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am feeling fantastic. This is what I came to Exact to do,\u201d Beer said. A practicing oncologist, Beer said that he\u2019s reminded every Friday in clinic of the world of difference that catching cancer early can make. The promise of liquid biopsy tests is to do that for dozens of cancers, not just breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, and cervical cancer.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are introducing a test, but we are really starting a new era in cancer early detection. It\u2019s early days, but I think in 10 years, when we look back on today, we won\u2019t believe we used to only screen for a handful of cancers,\u201d Beer said.<\/p>\n
