STAT+: Amid industry headwinds, Biogen breaks ground on new headquarters

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. \u2014 Biogen on Tuesday held a ceremonial\u00a0groundbreaking of its 16-story headquarters<\/a>\u00a0in Kendall Square, ushering in the latest phase of the neighborhood\u2019s transformation from \u201cNowhere Square\u201d to what its backers like to call \u201cthe most innovative square mile on the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n Nobel laureates Walter Gilbert and Phillip A. Sharp cofounded Biogen in 1978 and, four years later,set up shop in a warehouse on Binney Street. When the company moves into its 580,000-square-foot headquarters at 75 Broadway in 2028, Biogen will be celebrating its 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are surrounded by global beacons of progress and ingenuity \u2014\u00a0companies that led us out of the pandemic<\/a>, scientists who are cracking the code on diseases like Alzheimer\u2019s and cancer, and startups destined to unlock answers just waiting to be discovered,\u201d said president and CEO Christopher A.
