My colleagues were hard at work throughout the weekend reporting on major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/10\/11\/cdc-firings-government-shutdown-hhs\/\" rel=\"noopener\">firings<\/a> across the CDC. We\u2019ve also got a ton of biopharma news to catch up on below.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-need-to-know-this-morning\">The need-to-know this morning<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n<strong>Biocryst Pharmaceuticals<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.biocryst.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/biocryst-acquire-astria-therapeutics-strengthening-presence-hae\" rel=\"noopener\">acquiring<\/a> <strong>Astria Therapeutics <\/strong>in a cash-and-stock deal with a $700 million enterprise value. The centerpiece of the transaction is Astria\u2019s long-acting injectable drug in late-stage clinical development to treat hereditary angioedema, or HAE, a serious tissue-swelling disorder. Biocryst markets a pill for HAE.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Kailera Therapeutics<\/strong>, a privately held developer of drugs for obesity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/10\/14\/kailera-therapeutics-obesity-drugs-fundraising\/\" rel=\"noopener\">raised $600 million<\/a> \u2014 one of the largest private financings this year.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Denali Therapeutics<\/strong> said the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.denalitherapeutics.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/denali-therapeutics-announces-fda-review-extension-bla\" rel=\"noopener\">extended by three months<\/a> a review of its treatment for Hunter syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. The approval decision date is now April 5, 2026.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Shah Capital<\/strong>, the second-largest shareholder of Covid vaccine maker\u00a0<strong>Novavax<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1000694\/000139834425019099\/fp0095822-1_ex991.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">sent a letter to the company\u2019s board<\/a>, urging them to considering selling the company in order to boost shareholder value.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/s203.q4cdn.com\/636242992\/files\/doc_financials\/2025\/q3\/3Q25-Earnings-Press-Release-Final-Draft-10-13-25-3PM-With-Attachments.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">kicked off<\/a> third-quarter earnings season and announced a plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jnj.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/johnson-johnson-announces-intent-to-separate-its-orthopaedics-business\" rel=\"noopener\">separate<\/a> its orthopedics business, but the diversified healthcare giant did not announce a\u00a0rumored acquisition of Protagonist Therapeutics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fda-scientists-say-politics-are-increasingly-overshadowing-data\">FDA scientists say politics are increasingly overshadowing data<\/h2>\n<p>Tension are escalating between career scientists and political leaders at the Food and Drug Administration as health secretary Robert F.
